Leveraging distributed consensus algorithms (such as blockchain and hashgraph), a basic pattern for decentralized identity services has emerged over the past 18 months. Quite often the focus of decentralized identity is on the proposed value it brings to people as a mechanism to help realize ‘self-sovereign identity’. However, decentralized identity may have much broader implications, and some have said that IoT will never reach its potential without decentralized device identity.
